Code review and consultation on Ontario building code Parts 3,9,10,and 11.

Part 3 -  Fire Protection, Occupant Safety and Accessibility (barrier free design)

Part 9 – Housing and Small Buildings ( up to 600 square meters(6460 sq ft) and up to 3 stories excluding basement)

Part 10 – Change of use
( example: in residential from single family home to Duplex. Commercial from service type suite to a retail out let)

Part 11 – Renovation
(includes performance level evaluation and compliance alternatives)

Meaning if a change of use is proposed, the building must be evaluated and if required, compensating construction must be detailed to bring the proposed construction up to current standards. Compliance alternatives are ways for designers to show that even though certain aspects of the proposed construction do not meet current standards they are acceptable in certain situations. As a rule this applies to  buildings that are over 5 years old.
